Exploring Zhanglin Huodi Temple Fair, a lively 200-year-old tradition
On March 16 (the 17th day of the second lunar month), Zhanglin Ancient Port (樟林古港) in Shantou, Guangdong, was bustling with crowds and the sound of drums as the annual Zhanglin Huodi Temple Fair reached its peak. A grand parade set off from the Huodi Temple (火帝庙), with participants carrying lanterns and colorful flags, winding through the ancient village alleys.
At the heart of the festivities is the Huodi Parade, featuring drum teams, Yingge dancers, dragon and lion dances, and other performances. As the procession moves through Zhanglin's historic streets, fireworks light up the sky, and the atmosphere is filled with excitement. The crowd continuously chants blessings for prosperity and good fortune, echoing throughout the village.
Zhanglin Ancient Port in Dongli Town, Chenghai District, is the birthplace of the famous red-headed junks and is recognized as one of Guangdong's top ten cultural landmarks along the Maritime Silk Road. The Huodi Parade has been a unique local tradition in this area for over 200 years, deeply cherished by overseas Chinese with ancestral ties to the region.
As night falls, thousands of lanterns illuminate the ancient port. The most distinctive sight is the row of lantern cabinets suspended above Zhongshan Street. These cube-shaped wooden frames, resembling horizontal display cases, are divided into three sections covered with white paper, showcasing intricate calligraphy and colorful paintings. When lit from within, the artwork comes to life, adding a mesmerizing touch to the festivities.
